For months, much of the debate over data centers has been reduced to two questions: How many jobs will they create, and how much electricity and water will they consume?

Those are important questions. But they don’t tell the whole story.

The bigger question is whether Virginia can turn its enormous investment in technology infrastructure into a lasting innovation economy.

Consider the opportunity to connect:

Virginia Tech’s research capabilities
The Southside-Roanoke-Blacksburg innovation ecosystem
Advanced manufacturing in Southside Virginia
AI computing and data infrastructure
Workforce development and technical education

These investments could become mutually reinforcing pieces of a larger economic strategy.

But that won’t happen automatically.

We need better regional planning, transparent infrastructure agreements, measurable economic returns, and stronger university-industry collaboration. I support responsible technology development. I also believe communities are right to demand answers about infrastructure costs, environmental impacts, and long-term benefits.

The real question isn’t whether Virginia should embrace AI. It’s whether we have a strategy to capture its full value.

What do you think Virginia’s biggest missing piece is: infrastructure, talent, research, or leadership?
