In this second part, we’ll examine how gaslighting affects us and the role of media and social platforms.

The Impact of Gaslighting

Gaslighting erodes confidence over time, leading to anxiety, self-doubt, and isolation, sometimes deepening into depression. Studies on domestic abuse suggest many survivors deal with it, like being told “The fight never happened” (National Domestic Violence Hotline, 2020). In media, constant spin can weaken trust in facts (Psychology Today, 2019). Consider James, 45, a teacher in Chicago: his colleague denied a shared deadline in 2021, leaving him stressed until he documented it.

Real-Life Example: Family Dynamics

In 2023, a mother in New York, Lisa, 36, faced her teenager denying a curfew breach, saying, “You’re too strict—it didn’t happen.” Months of tension followed until a neighbor’s video clarified the truth.

The Role of Media and Social Platforms

Media and social media can amplify gaslighting. Fox News downplayed January 6th initially, later settling with Dominion (NPR, 2021), while a UK tabloid overstated immigration stats in 2024 to sway readers, per a BBC fact-check. Scholar Robert Entman (2003) calls this “framing bias,” where focus shapes stories. On X, 26% of users see misleading content weekly (Pew Research Center, 2022), and Rumble’s 67 million users in 2024 include varied voices, some unverified (Forbes, 2024). Maria, 38, a parent in Texas, faced online rumors about her school’s policy in 2023, doubting her stance for months.

Real-Life Example: Online Community

In 2022, a gamer in Japan, Ken, 19, was accused on Discord of cheating, with peers insisting, “You’re lying—we saw it.” Evidence later proved his innocence, but the doubt lingered. Tomorrow we will discuss how you can fight back without screaming or shouting – hint: the truth will set you free.
